Did I ever tell you that I have the best husband in the whole wide world? Well, I do! Somehow, in the middle of a crazy month of work, he managed to plan a surprise for my birthday weekend! He took a day off and took us to Rügen Island to spend a relaxed long weekend!
I can’t even express how happy and excited I am! I can’t put into words how grateful I’m feeling, seriously. You see, the reason I can’t stop smiling is because my husband simply can’t keep a secret from me, and I love to be surprised. Bad combination, I know… I always find out what I’m getting for my birthday or Christmas, and I always uncover his plans of surprising me. That’s a bummer for both of us. But not this time! This time I was completely unaware of his plans and it felt sooooo soooo good to be surprised!
THE FIRST SURPRISE
Last Monday we had a public holiday but my husband worked on that day. I found it strange but I accepted it because I knew he had a lot of work to do, no biggie. Then this week I realized my birthday was on a Saturday and I started thinking that maybe he would take the Friday off… And then, when I was making some arrangements for Friday he just told me to not schedule anything for that day, and I knew! I was right, he had swapped the days so we could have a long weekend! I didn’t tell him anything because I knew he would be mad I’d found out again about his surprise for me…
So, on Thursday night we had a dinner with friends, here at home, and when we were already alone and cleaning everything he finally told me, “Pack your things, tomorrow we’re going away.” I can’t even tell you how happy I was at that moment! I think I even jumped!
He didn’t tell where we were going though… That felt even more awesome! And he messed a bit with me by telling me to pack my sport clothes, my bikini, a fancy dress… Ughhhh I was so eager to find out but so happy I didn’t!
On Friday morning he prepared breakfast, we packed and we left. Where to? I only found out when we were half an hour from the destination because I started seeing the highway signs.
So there I was, completely lost but also completely joyful. We were spending a couple of days in Rügen, a German island in the Baltic Sea. To be honest I didn’t even know that there were islands in Germany… sorry for my ignorance! Imagine my surprise when I asked (several times) Joaquim if we were really going to an island in the North of Germany 🙂
Surprise Surprise, we’re in Rügen!
We left home pretty late, no hurries, after all we were taking a relaxed weekend, and so we arrived at Lauterbach, a tiny little port village in the district of Putbus, already in the afternoon. We stayed in an awesome apartment in the Port Hotel Viktoria. Joaquim had booked only a room in the hotel, but when we arrived there to check-in they gave us a full apartment with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room, an equipped kitchen and a huge balcony! No extra charges or anything! That was a very good surprise for both of us!
I was completely amazed, to say the least. After we left our bags at the apartment we went to explore a bit.
At the port there was this tiny market where we bought these delicious small balls of fried dough with quark. And they were sooooo cheap! A box of 10 balls costed only 3,5€!!! Heaven on earth, that’s what I can say.
It was cold and there weren’t a lot of people in the village, but I didn’t care, I was ecstatic 😀
We found this cool playground where Olivia had a blast for more than an hour. Then was time for dinner so we went to Binz to try a fancy restaurant Joaquim had found in Yelp. Turns out all the restaurants in that street were full for us 🙁 So we got a bit far away from the beach line and found this Greek restaurant. The staff was nice with us and especially with Olivia (bonus points for them), the food was good and abundant and my caipirinha was delicious 😉 The prices were also better than the fancy ones from the beach.
the second surprise
THE BIGGEST SURPRISE OF ALL TIMES!
On the second day of our long weekend, Saturday, we got up and had breakfast at the hotel. Have I told you that breakfast is my favorite meal of the day and that I absolutely love to have breakfast at hotels? Well, I’m telling you now 😉
Since breakfast time Joaquim started to ask me if I was stressed out, to which I kept replying “no, I’m so happy! Do I look stressed out? I’m not.”
Joaquim suggested we could go and see the deer we had seen yesterday when we passed by in the car. Olivia would love to see them closely. I thought it was an awesome idea, but to tell you the truth he could have suggested anything, I would have said yes to everything because I was already in paradise. And he kept saying I looked stressed out… Even though I’m pretty sure I looked like the happiest person on earth.
A little before 11am he told me “well, you really look stressed out. I think you should get a massage.” to which I replied “nah, I’m fine, I’m happy here with both of you”. But he insisted “don’t you wanna be by yourself for one hour? I’ll take care of Olivia.” and I couldn’t believe… He had made a reservation for a full body massage! A full hour, full body massage! I had never had a massage! In fact, it was on my mid-term to-do list to have at least a back massage, and he knew it, and he remembered it. That was definitely the best surprise of all ♥ ♥ ♥
Joaquim and Olivia played in the playground and watch the swans, I just went to heaven and came back. After that we had lunch and went for a car drive while Olivia took her nap in the back seat.
After her nap we tried to go to Jasmund Natural Park to see the Königsstühl but it was so cold and windy, we were not prepared for a hike and it was getting late so we just got back to have dinner. We went to a beautiful place in the middle of the woods. The food was delicious and the only employe there was super nice. If you are a vegetarian I can’t recommend this place for you, sorry.
On Sunday morning we left Rügen and went to have lunch in Stralsund, a beautiful little village already in the mainland. We had an amazing time there! Olivia had simply the best time as we had lunch at a square with a fountain in the floor where all the kids were playing with the water.
I can say without a doubt this was the best birthday of my life! Why? Because it was a surprise! I love surprises! It’s so hard for Joaquim to surprise me which makes this weekend even more special! Thank you from the bottom of my heart my love!
